Sugicodama:Born from Cedar

Sugicodama is a work that was born from a Japanese cedar tree.
The cedar trees planted all over Japan form the starting point of my works.
Cedar has been used to make various things since ancient times.
It is a tree that deeply reflects human life.
Sugicodama is a work made from wood cut from a cedar tree and created while feeling the power of life and the relationship between human beings and nature.

Memories of Codama

I cut wood from trees and make polished round objects which I call Codama.
These Codama come from trees that have spent various lengths of time in various places.
During their growth, trees carve out the traces of their lives within their bark.
Their colors, patterns and rings that differ from year to year are the traces they leave behind.
When trees are transformed by humans into buildings or tools, traces are also left behind.
The shapes of Codama convey memories of the lives of trees.
I engage in dialogues with each tree and, through the Codama I carve, I hope to share their memories with everybody.
